We have been a little concerned with our safety since arriving at the apartment (see prior posts), so on Monday and Tuesday we discussed a couple of different options of what we could do about it. The first option was to move to another apartment, which was appealing at first, until the apartments were not up to par. The second option was to hire a 24 hour security guard to sit by our apartment. This is the option that we ended up going with. We now have personal security guards who sits by our apartment 24 hours a day.
Jeanah was a HUGE help in figuring our security issues. Jeanah knows everybody in Uganda, and with her help, we'll be updating our cast list soon. The list will include the 6 news Paul's that we have met. Everybody who calls us always asks for Jeanah, including our housekeeper who called today asking to talk to Jeanah about issues washing our 'knickers'. Unfortunately, Jeanah and Lisa are travelling up north (more about that later), so Courtney took the phone call:
Courtney: "WHAT WHAT WHAT's wrong with our knickers???"
Courtney: "WHAT WASH?! KNICKERS WHAT?!?!"
Courtney: "I can't hear you"
End call.
The conversations with Jeanah generally start as follows:
Uganda Friend: "Hello Jeanah, you're welcome"
Jeanah: "Hi, Thank you so much for talking to me"
This may seem like we are being over the top. But for those of you who know us, know that we are all well travelled ladies. That being said, our guards will not be armed. He is from KK Security and arrived on the back of a Boda with Clemente (the guy who drives security guards around). Our night guard is Moses. Aka Skin and Bones. Everybody on our team could beat him up, including Jeanah. Our concern is that he was supposed to have a 12 hour shift, and this morning, 15 hours later, he was still there. We were very concerned when we got home last night that Moses had no water and no chair. Alas, he had a chair, but Courtney asked him if he wanted water. The conversation went as follow:
Courtney: "Moses, would you like some water?"
Moses, skin and bones: "You're welcome, I'm from the North"
Courtney: Crickets
We got him some water anyway.
Even though we have hired our own security guard who sits on the 3rd floor (where our apartment is), Wellie still feels the need to hide behind the column 1/2 his size whenever anybody is approaching. He has been learning how to hide lately, he tucked his arms behind the column when we came home last night, even though his wellie's were still shining brightly in the light. Wellie was a little suspicious of skin and bones, and peeked around the corner as we greeted him and entered our apartment last night.
We think Wellie has since been demoted to common area maid as he was sweeping the stairs as we left this morning.
